Fairway at the CSEA member maintained Eisenhower Park Red Course |
When CSEA Local 830 holds its annual Golf Outing on July 21 at the Eisenhower Park Red Course in East Meadow, the course will only be 3 weeks removed from hosting some of the country’s best golfers, for the Annual Commerce Bank Championship. This is the sixth year that Eisenhower is hosting this event, which always gets great feedback from the golfers for the course’s excellent condition.
On May 8, a Newsday articleraved about the extraordinary condition of the public golf course. That’s thanks mostly to the work of the CSEA members that maintain it. 40,000 rounds are played each year on the Red Course. 150,000 rounds are played total between the 3 Eisenhower courses. Most public courses have a difficult time keeping up with divots and maintaining true greens and fairways, through all that wear and tear. Not for Eisenhower though.
According to the Newsday article, a prominent pro golfer approached Golf Director Gene Contino last year and said he had played Shinnecock Hills (one of the nation’s top courses) earlier in the week, and said the Red’s greens were truer and smoother. Contino said it’s all about the passion that he and his staff has for their profession. Their passion is paying such great dividends that there have been talks about holding a PGA Champions Tour major there in the future.
