At the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) dinner at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place on October 26th, Department of Social Services’ employee and CSEA member Bill Hughes was honored for his great dedication to the community by being President of the Hempstead Coordinating Council of Civics, serving on the Village of Hempstead Zoning and Appeals Board as well as being President of the Hempstead Heights Civic Association and Development Corporation.

Bill believes strongly in promoting and mentoring young people as future leaders which is proven by his membership to the Administrative Committee of the Weed and Seed Program where he encourages youth to seek positive activities.  Recently, Bill also became Board President of Harbor Child Care, Incorporated which operates programs in six locations throughout Nassau County.

In addition to all that, he is a Vietnam War veteran and an active member of the Gomillon Campbell Post of the American Legion.

After 18 years of service at the Department of Social Services, Bill is now retiring.  Local 830 would like to thank him for all his great service over the years to Nassau County and to the community.

Bill’s accolades would not have been possible without the hard work of Department of Public Works member Rudy Bruce.  Rudy is the President of the Long Island Chapter of the CBTU.  He says the main objectives of this organization is to put forth greater and more creative efforts to improve the image of labor throughout the community.

There are 51 chapters of the CBTU throughout the nation and Rudy’s hard work has made the Long Island Chapter one of the most successful.
