The Region One Veterans Committee on Flag Day

The CSEA Long Island Region One Veterans Committee raised $857 for the New York State Veterans Home on the campus of Stony Brook University, and presented SBU officials with a check on June 10.  As part of the AFSCME matching funds program, they donated $857 as well for a total of $1714. 

Local 830 Veterans Committee Chair Debbie O’Connell, Committee member Debbie Buonagura, and Local 830 member from Nassau County Veterans Services Michael Kilbride were on hand to deliver the check to Deputy Executive Director Joe Lapietra.

On June 14, the Region One Vets Committee celebrated Flag Day by disposing of worn, torn or tattered flags at Region One Headquarters in Commack.  20 flags were burned. Maryann Phelps moderated proceedings, which included the pledge of allegiance, members reading verses of poem "I am the flag," prayers for POW's, the disposition or burning, and lowering flag in front of region office to half mast for ceremony.
